Kathmandu
Kathmandu, the capital city of Nepal, is one of the world's oldest cities. The old part of the city, with narrow medieval streets and lovely little shrines, centers on the Durbar Square. Here one can find distinctive pagoda-roofed temples, stone sculptures, old monasteries and historic monuments.
Bhaktapur
Bhaktapur or also known as Bhadgaon , is a museum of medieval art and architecture with many fine examples of sculpture, woodcarving and colossal pagoda temples consecrated to different gods and goddesses. The city is shaped like a conch shell-one of the emblems of the god Vishnu and was founded by King Ananda Deva in A.D.889. The city is 1,402 meters above sea level. Pottery and weaving are its major traditional industries. The city lies fifteen Kilometers to the east of Kathmandu.
Patan
The ancient name of Patan is Lalitpur meaning, city of beauty. It is indeed a city of beauty and grace and is planned on a circular format with Buddhist stupas at each of the four points of the compass. The city is three Kilometers south-east of Kathmandu across the river Bagmati. Like Kathmandu, its center of attraction is its Durbar Square complex, situated right in the middle of the market place. The city is full of Buddhist monuments and Hindu temples with fine bronze gateways, guardian deities and wonderful carvings. Noted for its craftsmen and metal workers, it is also know as the city of artists. The city is believed to have been built during the reign of Vira Dev in A.D. 299.
Pokhara
Pokhara, an enchanting city nestled in the tranquil valley (827m), is the starting point for many of Nepal’s most popular trekking and rafting destinations. The serenity of Phewa Lake and the magnificence of the fish-trail summit of Machachhapuchhre (6,977m) rising behind it create an ambience of peace and magic. The valley surrounding Pokhara is home to thick forests, gushing rivers, clear lakes and the world famous views of the Himalaya. Situated 200 km west of Kathmandu, Pokhara is connected by air as well as by road from Kathmandu and Bhairawa, a border town near India. Standing west to the Mayadevi shrine is the oldest monument of Nepal, the Ashoka Pillar. Emperor Ashoka erected the pillar in 249 BC to commemorate his pilgrimage to the sacred site. To the south of the pillar, we find the sacred pond, {Puskarni} where Queen Mayadevi had taken a bath just before giving birth to Lord Buddha. Much of this route is spent above 3,000m.The highest point of this trek is Ganjala Pass (5,122m). On the very pass of Ganjala, the last few 100m trails are precarious so we use a rope there for safety, though the utmost care is enough. The descent from the pass is on a steep slope for over 1 km, which requires good care again. But the rest of the trail is easy and comfortable. As there are no lodges and no settlements for three days along the way, the group should be well equipped with enough food. Only organized camping treks are possible for this region. The use of firewood is also prohibited within the park, so all supplies should be taken with us.

After passing the Ganjala Pass, the trail takes you to Malemchi gaon and Tarke Ghyang. People here call themselves Sherpas but their relationship with the Sherpa of Solu Khumbu is distant. The dialects spoken are also different. People here follow the Buddhist religion so you will find many old Buddhist monasteries in the villages. Tarkeghyang is another Sherpa town along the way, which bears its own story. The town name means temple of "100 horses" and was taken from the name of a temple established in 1727 by a Lama (Buddhist monk) who was called on by the king of Kathmandu (Kantipur) to stop an epidemic. As his reward the Lama asked for 100 horses, which he brought here. The local temple, rebuilt in 1969, follows the Bhutanese style.

Gosaikunda, a glacier lake, is the most famous one with several others glacier lakes adjoining it. Thousands of Hindu pilgrims visit the lakes during a full- moon festival in August and Hindu people believe that the god Mahadev (Shiva), intoxicated by grief due to his wife's (Parbati) death, felt thirsty so he hit the stone with his holy stick, thus creating the lakes. In the same place Lake Gosaikunda originates and Hindu people believe that the image of Mahadev can be seen in the middle surface of the water. The lake is also scared to Buddhists.

This is a journey with numerous highlights, stunning views of Ganesh Himal, Manaslu and Annapurna massif as far as you can see. The Tamang and Sherpa people living here, physically and culturally resemble the Tibet inhabitants and their unique lifestyle is still thriving under their traditional attitude. Abundant wildlife, intense forest teaming with wild flowers and animal species, adds interest to this trek for nature lovers.

Tamang Heritage Trail & Langtang Valley

Tamang Heritage TrailThis is a superb introduction to trekking in Nepal among some of the most beautiful scenery in the whole country, with rich tamang culture. Many years ago Nepal, fought with Tibet for salt and some of the biggest areas where this war took place is in the Langtang Region of Nepal, wherein lies the third most popular trekking trail in Nepal.
This area is connected to Tibet and the trails in this region were used by traders from Tibet bartering in Salt and mountain goats for meat (changra) with foodstuffs from the south. Developed by the Tourism for Rural Poverty Alleviation Program (RPAP), the "Tamang Heritage Trail" is the newly developed tourism product, off the beaten track, which highlights an ancient lifestyle combining it with picturesque scenery and healing baths in natural hot springs. The people of this region are mostly Tibetans who came from Kerung in Tibet across the border and settled in Nepal. In earlier days, the citizenship of Nepal would not be offered to real Tibetans, so they changed their ethnicity to Tamang, which is what they still write till date. The cultural and traditions of these people are similar to the Tibetan across the border.

This trekking destination is just a day long bus journey from the capital, Kathmandu. This trekking tour provides varieties of experience. Tamang rituals, Tibetan culture, festivals, traditional architecture, costumes, local Syabru dances make the exposure to this culture very unique. There is a view point at Goljung Pass, from where views of Langtang and Kerung (Tibet) can be awe inspiring. Visitors will get an opportunity to observe Syabru, Mane and other local dances at Goljung and Gatlang VDCs. The villages also sell exclusive handicraft items like traditional caps, mufflers and other items. Tourists can enjoy hot bath in the healing hot-water spring at Tatopani before reaching Nagthali, where the stay is a unique experience. The ancient monasteries and houses adorned with rich wood engravings at Thuman is an unforgettable experience. At Briddim one gets to experience the famous Tamang hospitality, where there is home stay facility in 24 houses. After the Tamang heritage trail we will head towards the Langtang.

Langtang is a narrow valley situated 75 km north of Kathmandu close to the Tibetan border. Just a couple of days walking finds you amongst beautiful snow peaks of the Ganesh and Langtang ranges. Following the Langtang Khola (river) will take you to the settlement of Kyanjin Gompa at 3900m. This is the furthest place to find lodges up the valley.

Kyanjin Monastery, Langtang Valley
The Langtang Valley was designated the first national park of Nepal in 1971. Most of the people in the region are Tamang whose culture, religion and language are very similar to that of Tibet. Beautiful landscapes and pretty villages make this a relatively easy and therefore popular trekking destination. Last but not the least Combining the Tamang heritage trails with the Langtang would be one of the best trails in Nepal like the Annapurna circuit or the Everest Base Camp.
